Birth and Growth

Age 1 (1879)
(Sept. 2, 1879, or July 16 in a lunar year): Ahn Jung-geun is born the eldest son of father Ahn Tae-hun and mother Jo Maria in 
Gwangseok-dong in Haeju-bu, Hwanghae-do. Ahn Jung-geun is born the eldest son of father Ahn Tae-hun and mother Jo Maria 
in Gwangseok-dong in Haeju-bu, Hwanghae-do.
Age 6 (1884)
Ahn’s family moves from Haeju to Cheonggye-dong, Dura-myeon in Sincheon-gun, Hwanghae-do. Ahn receives a Chinese 
classics lesson at a private village school established by his grandfather Ahn In-su.
Age 7 (1885)
Younger brother Jeong-geun is born.
Age 11 (1889)
Younger brother Gong-geun is born.
Age 13 (1891)
Younger sister Seong-nyeo is born.
Age 14 (1892)
Grandfather Ahn In-su passes away.
Age 16 (1894)
Marries Kim A-ryeo (aged 17 then), daughter of Kim Hong-seop, a local elite who lives in Jaeryeong-gun in Hwanghae-do. 
Ahn participates in a battle in the Hwanghae-do area against the Donghak peasants’ army as a spearhead vanguard of the 
righteous army organized by his father Ahn Tae-hun and becomes known for his bravery. At the invitation of his father, 
Ahn meets with Kim Gu, whose pen-name was Baekbeom. 
Age 18 (1896)
Father Ahn Tae-hun escapes to Jonghyeon (Myeongdong) Catherdral on account of controversies surrounding the military 
provisions he had taken from the Donghak peasants’ army; he later returns to Cheonggye-dong.
Age 19 (1897)
Ahn and his family members are baptized by Father J. Wilhelm (Korean name Hong Seok-gu). Ahn receives his baptismal name 
“Thomas.”
